Steve Ver Halen

Steve Ver Halen
Steve is a product of the late sixties,  the era of lava lamps, bell bottoms, and a huge boom in the guitar industry, due to a plethora of "garage bands" springing up on virtually every street, in every town, all across America, as a result of The Beatles, and the subsequent proliferation of British and American rock bands.  Steve was no exception, having received his first guitar (a Sears Silvertone acoustic) in sixth grade.  Unfortunately, since it was a cheaply made guitar, the strings were about three inches off the fingerboard (all right, probably only a third of an inch, but it seemed like three inches).  Therefore, after numerous unsuccessful attempts to master the fine art of guitar chords, Steve discovered the bass guitar, which had only four strings, played one note at a time.
Thus began a distinguished career as a bassist in high school "garage bands" (although, they actually practiced in the lead guitarist's basement). Surely you remember the highly popular bands "Sam Hill" and "Farmer Rebellion"? No?? I guess you had to live in Steve's neighborhood, or more specifically, his lead guitarist's house.

Anyway, after a 15 year hiatus from playing music, Steve decided, in 1985, to start playing again. And, in addition to bass, he finally was able to figure out some of them tricky guitar chords (on a much better made guitar). Steve produced three tapes of original songs in the late eighties and early nineties (on a home 4-track recorder), and in 1989, when he and Jane started hanging around together, she exposed him to Contemporary Christian Music, which Steve enjoyed much more than the music he had been playing, as it combined a good message, with music that rocked!

Besides playing bass, occasional guitar and singing backup, Steve also dabbles in keyboards, and other stringed instruments. He feels that guitars are works of art, and is an avid guitar history buff, as well as a collector of guitars and basses.
